Thomas Edison Light Bulb

World-famous inventor Thomas Edison was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio, but grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. As a boy, Edison had trouble concentrating in school and only received three months of official education. After that, he was home-schooled by his mother. When he was 19, Edison moved to Kentucky and began work as a telegraph operator for the Associated Press news wire. This experience led to his invention of the quadruplex telegraph in 1874. Three years later, he invented the phonograph and then in 1880, was granted a patent for his incandescent light bulb.

It's common belief that Edison was the first inventor of the light bulb, but the electric light actually dates back to 1809 when a man named Humprey Davy put a strip of charcoal between two battery wires and made it glow. It was a British physicist and chemist named Joseph Swan who actually patented a carbon filament light bulb. After Edison's patent about a year later, the Thomas Edison light bulb became known as a "collaboration" of efforts between Swan and Edison.

A Historic Bulb from a Historic Company

To honor Edison's contribution to electricity, Ferrowatt created a Thomas Edison light bulb. These light bulbs feature a hand-blown style and looped filaments that are true to Edison's design. Their warm amber glow and subtle flicker provide a historic character and their craftsmanship add a rustic charm to any ambiance.

Like the Thomas Edison light bulb, the Ferrowatt company is piece of history that has been reborn. Ferrowatt was founded in Vienna, Austria in the late 19th century and successfully rivaled large manufacturers like Philips and OSRAM through the 1930s. The company went into dormancy until the early 1990s, when Aamsco founder Bob Rozenzweig visited the Czech Republic and found the original Ferrowatt building still standing. Since then, Aamsco has worked to reestablish the brand..
